The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® judges: Ensuring fairness and professionalism

The world of STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® is characterised by top performance, excitement and adrenaline. However, the success of every competition is dependent on our dedicated judges who ensure compliance with rules, and fairness throughout competitions. Our judges are the backbone of our competitions, there to guarantee events proceed smoothly and safely, as well as to fairly assess performance.

The “Global Judge Team” is continually reviewing and refining the rules so that athletes are always competing under fair conditions. Among other activities, the team’s work includes an annual meeting for the purpose of discussing the previous competition season.

The Global Judge Team is currently made up of:

  • Andy Hall (GBR)
  • Radu Cazacu (ROM)
  • Dr. Richard Hallett (USA)
  • Bart Jansen (NED)
  • Sjuul Jansen (NED)
  • Ruud Meijer (NED)
  • Noud Van Lier (NED)

As well as the Global Judge Team members, there are many other judges who are deployed in competitions at national level.

The indispensable role of judges at TIMBERSPORTS®

STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® judges usually work in teams of two or three. Global Sports Director Spike Milton talks about how to become a TIMBERSPORTS® judge: “Anyone can apply to be a judge; it’s the same as with refereeing international football or rugby.” Our judges have many years of experience and a deep understanding of the demanding disciplines of STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®. They are experts not only when it comes to handling chainsaws and axes, but also in applying the specific rules and evaluation criteria of each discipline. Professionalism, composure, calmness under pressure and a good understanding of the sport are especially important characteristics for this role, Spike Milton points out.

The judges’ role is of particular significance for the athletes, as it serves the objectives of fairness and equal treatment in competition. STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® makes it a priority to ensure that every competition is evaluated impartially and neutrally. “The judges never want to disqualify athletes, they only want to see real winners who comply with the rules and do not commit any violations,” says Spike Milton.

Safety is number one

Our judges oversee the progress of the competition, but also ensure compliance with all rules and safety standards. To avoid injuries and protect the health of athletes, they are trained to immediately identify potential risks and to respond appropriately. The expertise and commitment of our judges significantly contribute to making sure that TIMBERSPORTS ® competitions run fairly and safely.
