STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® is revving up for one of the biggest World Championships in its history as ‘The Original Extreme Sport’ heads to the South of France for its annual global showdown in November. The 2024 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® World Championship will take place on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th November at the Zénith Toulouse Métropole in what is expected to be a sell-out crowd for elite logger sport’s showpiece international event.
Tickets for the event are still available and can be purchased via Seetickets.
With more than 100 athletes from 19 nations set to land in Toulouse, locals and travelling fans can expect to bask in a celebration of elite woodchopping and sawing over two days of intense, highly skilled and heart-pounding axe-tion.
New faces and familiar foes as Chopperoos remain the team to beat
The season’s flagship Team event will open proceedings, with 19 nations set to do battle. In a brand-new addition to the Team World Championship line-up, China will enter the international stage for the first time with a newly assembled team. While one nation will be making its debut at the competition, one thing remains the same: the dominance of Team Australia.
‘The Chopperoos’ will be aiming to win an unprecedented fifth consecutive Team World Championship in France – adding weight to the argument that the rest of the field really does have nothing ‘Toulouse’. Hoping to end Australia’s historic run of victories will be leading overseas nations New Zealand, Canada and last year’s runners-up, USA.
The European challenge is likely to come from Czechia and Poland, while France will be in a confident mood as they seek to entertain a partisan crowd.
New winner guaranteed in Individual competition
While Australia will be looking to defend their Team title once again, there is no chance of back-to-back titles in the Individual competition, with last year’s Individual World Champion, Australia’s Jim Head, pipped to qualification by Kody Steers, who will make his debut on the individual world stage having set six personal bests during the Australian Championship. He’ll be joined by fellow debutant Nate Hodges, who sprung a surprise in the U.S. Championships to qualify for the Individual competition in a breakthrough season.
Other overseas athletes likely to have a say in the medal positions are New Zealand’s reigning, three-time World Trophy champion, Jack Jordan, and Canada’s Ben Cumberland, who will be looking for redemption having suffered a shock first-round exit in last year’s competition.
The European contingent will be spearheaded by Sweden’s Ferry Svan (who beat last year’s Individual World Championship runner-up Emil Hansson in qualification), the Netherlands’ Redmer Knol, Belgium’s Koen Martens, Poland’s Michał Dubicki and 2023 bronze medalist Danny Martin, from Germany. The host nation will be represented by Alexandre Meurisse, who will have the hopes of his countrymen and women on his burly shoulders after beating home favourite and serial National Champion Pierre Puybaret in qualification.
